1. Open Notepad and create an empty file. Save the empty file as vpn.txt on your desktop.
2. Find the vpn.txt file on your desktop. Right click it to rename the .txt file extension to .pbk.
Ignore the alert and click “Yes”.
3. Now you’ll see a vpn.pbk file on your desktop.
4. Double click vpn.pbk and you will see a popup saying “The phonebook is empty. Press OK and add an entry”. Press “OK”.
5. In the new connection wizard, select “Connect to a private network through the Internet”.
6. Select “Do not dial the initial” and press “Next”.
7. Enter the VPN server hostname or IP. Here we use hotfreevpn as an example. You can get this info at http://us.hotfreevpn.com.
8. Name the VPN connection as what you want. We name it as “us.hotfreevpn.com” so it is easy to be recognized.
Click “Finish”.
9. You will see the “us.hotfreevpn.com” connection is now in the .pbk file. Press “Connect” button.
10. Type in the VPN user name and the password. You can get this info from the VPN service provider. Check “Save this user name and password …”.
Click “Connect” and start to connect.
11. Connecting…
Wait till your computer is connected to the VPN server successfully.
12. To disconnect the VPN connection, please double click vpn.pbk from your desktop. Click “Hang Up” button to disconnect VPN connection.
The steps above are done on Windows XP operating system. We have a tutorial on how to use a .pbk file on Windows 7. If you are using Windows 7, please follow this tutorial.
13. If you have new VPN to add, just double click the vpn.pbk file and you will see a “New” button. You can add new VPN connection by pressing “New” button.
You can make your own .pbk file for easy VPN connection now! The VPN connection setup by this method is PPTP type. You can select a connection, edit the properties to change it to L2TP/IPsec type.
